Blogging 101

July 13, 2009 by Cara · Leave a Comment

If writing is an art, then, blogging is one way of using words to come up with an art. This is because people who are into blogging are the ones who are artistic on their own sense, carefully choosing words that would best describe their feelings, sentiments, wishes, desires, and everything.

Basically, blogs were first introduced as weblogs that refer to a “server’s log file.” It was created when web logging hit the virtual market. Since its inception in the mid-1990s, web logging gradually saturated the virtual community making the Internet a viable source of greater information.

However, with web logging, you still need a web site and domain names, but with blogging, you do not need anything just an account with blog providers. In most cases, these kinds of blogs are free of charge.

With the onset of blogging in the industry, personal journaling had been a common ground for people who wish to be known all over the world. However, not literally famous as this is not a case on being popular or well-known personality.

Generally, blogs are created for personal use. Like a journal, people can write their daily adventures, sentiments, and whatever ideas they want to express online. Nevertheless, with the advent of the online businesses, blogs had gradually taken the limelight in providing businesses a chance to boost their productivity online. This is where the business blogs have taken the limelight.

Business blogs are, basically, created to advertise the services or products of a certain web site or online business in order to increase online sales. Moreover, business blogs are also one way of promoting the company so that the other readers will know that a certain company exists online. With blogs, entrepreneurs are able to establish a name in the virtual market through articles that can be very useful in the reader’s life.

From there, you can make money out of blogs by simply syndicating it to your business’ web site. This can be done through the RSS technology.

So, if you are thinking to create a blog, whether for business or for pleasure, you need to know some tips that could help you get through and make your blog one of the interesting blogs online.

Here’s how:

1. Consider your audience

Even if your blog is generally personal, still, it would be better to consider the minds of your readers. You have to think of something that would interest them.

After all, most of the reasons of people who write blogs are not at all confined to their own personal motives. Most of them would love to be “heard” (or read) and would love to be known, in some way or another, even for just a minute. Hence, it is very important to come with a write up that everybody can understand, not necessarily that these people can relate to it but they can understand it.

2. Pictures speaks a thousand words

To make your blogging worth the browsing effort of your readers, it would be extremely nice if you will put some pictures in it. It does not necessarily mean you have to place a picture of yourself. Any photographs will do as long as it does not pose danger or insult to anyone who will be reading your blog.

3. Make constructive and beneficial blogs

Even if you are free to write anything you wan to say to the world, still, it would be better to create some write-ups that would be beneficial to your readers.

After all, its information technology that you have there so better be inclined to provide information rather than sheer quirky entertainment.

4. Avoid making multifaceted and complicated blogs

In order to have an interesting blogs, try not to use some highly technical and highfalutin words. After all, it is not a science discourse or a debate that you are making, so better stick to simple facts and short blogs.

Bear in mind that most people who use the Internet usually do more scanning than scrutinizing each site word for word. Therefore, it would be better to come with blogs that will not bore your readers just because you have these lengthy articles.

5. Make it interactive

As much as possible and if your capacity will allow it, make your blog interactive. Yu can do this by placing some video or audio clips in your blog.

You can even place an area for comments or for some feedbacks. In this way, you can get some impressions or reactions of other people. Who knows, you might even gain some friends just by making them feel at home in your blog site.

Indeed, blogs are not created just for the mere fun of it. It also has its own purpose in the world of the Internet.
Therefore, for people who wish to harness their craft, as far as writing is concerned, blogs are the best way to do it.

Using Social Networking Websites to Promote Your Blog

July 12, 2009 by Cara · Leave a Comment

Do you know what the main purpose of a social networking website is?  If you are an avid internet user, you likely do. Social networking websites are online communities that make it easier for internet users to meet and communicate with each other.  If you are an internet user who enjoys using the internet to meet new people, there is a good chance that you already belong to a social networking website.  What about an online blog?  Do you have one of them?  If you do, do you know that you could use your social networking website to promote your blog?

Promote your blog?  Why would you want to do that?  Honestly, if you have to ask yourself that question you probably shouldn’t even have one.  The whole purpose of a blog is to document your thoughts, views, and opinions on a particular topic, issue, or subject.  What good will your blog do if no one reads it.  In addition to sharing your thoughts with the rest of the world, did you know that you could also make money from your blog?  You can signup for affiliate programs or other programs like Google Adsense.  If you are using your blog to make money then you will defiantly want to promote it.

When it comes to promoting blogs, there are many blog owners who decide to let the search engine do the work for them.  Search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN use special techniques that reads the content on your website. That content is then used to rank your website with particular keywords.  This means that you run a blog on graduating from high school in New York, there is a good chance that your blog will appear in searches done on New York high schools. Although many blogs are successfully ranked in search engines, not all are. That is why you are advised against relying solely on search engines, when it comes to promoting your blog.

As previously mentioned, if you love meeting with or talking to people online, there is a good chance that you belong to a social networking website or community. The individuals that you talk to and that are in your community are likely the individuals that you wish to target. Since most social networking websites work to connect internet users who have the same goals and common interests, there is a good chance that your online friends will enjoy reading your blog.  But, before they can read your blog, you have to let them know that it exists.

When it comes to promoting your blog on social networking websites, you have a number of different options. Your first option is to include a link to your blog in your community profile or profile page. This will allow other community members to checkout your blog, only if they wish to do so.  The other way is to inform your online friends of your blog through private messages. Once you join a social networking website and create or join a network of friends, you should easily be able to communicate with those friends.  Sending each of your friends a private message with information and a link to your blog tends to be more effective than just placing a link in your profile or on your profile page.

Although there is a good chance that you are already a member of a popular social networking website, you may not be. If you are not already a member, but would like to become one, you will need to find a social networking website to join. This can easily be done with a standard internet search. In your search, you will likely find a number of popular network sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, and Orkut.  Before becoming a community member at one of these networking sites, you may want to first examine the website to ensure that it is everything that you want it to be.

As you can easily see, there are a number of different ways that you can go about promoting your blog on online social networking websites. You never known, but, in addition to promoting your blog, you may also make new friends along the way.

Small Business Blogging: 10 Ways to Use Blogs to Increase Business

April 8, 2009 by Cara · Leave a Comment

Business Week magazine has claimed, “blogs will change your business.” The Wall Street Journal has stated “the blog as business tool has arrived”. Yet, less than 10% of small businesses use blogs to promote their products and services. This cost-effective promotional tool is more often overlooked, rather than used to its full potential.

While millions of people are starting blogs, both personal and professional, those who use to blogs to promote small businesses are still very much in the minority. Creating a blog, and keeping it updated allows you to stand out as an informational resource in your field, a powerful perception in your customers’ eyes.

Here are some strategies for using blogs as a promotional platform for virtually any business.

  1. If you’re hosting an upcoming sale or special promotion, gather the details, and post them to your blog. This lets customers know when to take advantage of the discounts.
  2. If you want to move a specific product, post a tip on how to use it, or include a picture of a completed project. Then let customers know they can get that product from you.
  3. If you’re interested in enticing more teens into your store, give a teen “guest blogging” privileges, and have her post her top five favorite products each month.
  4. Keep your content fresh with timely announcements, such as when the new service is available, or when a new employee has been added to your staff.
  5. Offer reminders: when class registrations start, and end; holiday countdowns; and saving items for an upcoming charity drive.
  6. Advise customers when products sell out, or are backordered
  7. Tempt customers with listings of new product arrivals.
  8. Report on the latest scoop from trade shows (these can even be blogged while on the road!)
  9. Educate your customers with links to helpful informational websites and project instructions.
  10. Open a discussion: ask customers to post their favorite organizational tips in the Comments section, for instance. Or offer a question of the week, and encourage customers to respond online.

Many small business owners struggle with too much to do, and not enough time. Although creating and maintaining a blog is easy, many professionals don’t have the time to dedicate to researching the how-to. For these situations, consider seeking out a blog and marketing consultant who can walk you through the steps of setting up a blog – like me!  I can help you better understand how to use the blog to most effectively market your business.

Local Search Gets Really Promising For Small Business Owners

April 7, 2009 by Cara · Leave a Comment

As the leading search engine, it’s important to pay attention when Google makes changes. And this recent change is huge for local small business marketing! Google’s latest changes brings local results up in the search – without geographic modifiers like city, or zipcodes.

What it all boils down to is that getting listed in Google Maps is more important than ever, because now local search will be shown even for wider searches, like pizza, restaurant, and hair salon. With local search you can appear in the first page of Google organically.

This is significant because consumers are already coming online are performing local searches. Local search accounts for about 66% of online searches and in a recent study by TMP Directional Marketing, 82% of those searches lead to offline action, including in-store visits, phone calls, e-mails or purchases. Why not take advantage of a free way to attract some of that traffic?

To see how this works, simply visit Google.com and enter a search phrase for dentist. You’ll notice at the 4th or 5th result is “Local business results for dentist near…”. This could be you!

There are few businesses out there that couldn’t benefit from getting listed in Google local, even if you don’t have a website. Use Facebook or Squidoo in the time being while you sort out what you want in a website. If you don’t have plans for a website, then you and I should talk, seriously.
